WOODLAND PARK, NJ - John P. Holland Charter School (JPHCS) continued a heartwarming tradition as they held their Annual Million Father March on Wednesday. This event, which has become an annual celebration on the school's opening day, gathered fathers and male role models to cheer on their children as they embarked on a new academic year.
"The most exciting thing about this year's march is watching it become part of our brand," Dr. Heru Keonté, Principal 3-8 of JPHCS said. "We have been doing this since 2015. Our fathers and male role models expect this. That, in itself, is a significant accomplishment."
The event, school officials said, is part of a national movement encouraging fathers and other significant role models to actively participate in and support their children's education. The initiative began in 2004 in 40 cities and has since grown, mirroring the growth of John P. Holland Charter School itself.
"When fathers and role models actively support their children's learning journey, they not only build brighter futures but also create lasting memories," Ronaldo Christmas, a father told TAPinto Paterson. "If it's something positive that your kid wants to do, then do it. You have to keep it positive, and you have to support your kids."
"When you are involved in your kid's life, this is just another way of showing support," Orville Fanny, another father said. "This is just trying to motivate them. When there are more fathers or male role models present, kids tend to listen more. They tend to think differently, and they get a sense of confidence. They [kids] need you, don't just sit with them, have a conversation with them, it's very important."
Guest speakers, including Mayor Andre Sayegh, New Jersey Assemblyman Benji Wimberly and Doug Goulding from Go F.A.R were also present at the march offering words of wisdom to fathers and male role models.
"Your involvement as dads is invaluable, and it can make a significant difference in your kids' futures," Goulding said. "Just like my father believed in me, your support can help your children achieve incredible things. Remember, when dads are engaged, kids go farther. So, give yourselves a round of applause and keep being amazing dads."
"I want to emphasize the importance of being present for our kids," Sayegh said. "Despite challenges, we can make a difference in their lives. Let's choose to be the best fathers we can be and lead by example. We are the MVPs in their lives, and there are no excuses."
Wimberly talked about the significance of being his children's voice, driving them to school, and teaching them their ABCs. He stressed the value of being visible in their lives, attending their events, and always letting them know they are loved.
