WOODLAND PARK, NJ - John P. Holland Charter School celebrated Read Across America week by hosting a special event featuring Darryl McDaniels, a member of the iconic hip-hop group RunDMC.

McDaniels engaged students with readings from his book "Darryl's Dreams," which tells the story of a shy third-grader named Darryl facing challenges from bullies while pursing his passion for writing. The event aimed to promote literacy and inspire students through McDaniels' storytelling and the empowering message of his book.

Additionally, McDaniels shared insights into his work as the author of a comic book, enriching the students' experience with diverse forms of literature.

"When you read, you are emotionally different," McDaniels said. "Reading allows them [students] to understand themselves and navigate life. Education is just information with the contents of patience and helps them succeed in any path they choose in life."

Read Across America Month, celebrated annually in March, is a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging reading and literacy among students of all ages. Schools around the world participate in various activities and events throughout the month to promote the joy of reading.
