WOODLAND PARK, NJ - John P. Holland Charter School (JPHCS) celebrated the addition of a new perennial pollinator garden to its campus this week. Created and planted by the school’s 8th graders, the garden serves as a practical initiative in environmental stewardship and community service, made possible through the "Dig In!" community garden grant provided by City Green and the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners.
Students gathered to celebrate their efforts and the positive environmental impact of their garden. Located near the outdoor classrooms, this garden not only adds beauty to the space but also functions as a living laboratory for students.
“This project not only enhances our outdoor learning environment but also contributes to the biodiversity of our campus,” Dr. Keonte, Principal for grades 3-8 said. “It’s a testament to our commitment to service and to nurturing future leaders who care for their community.”
Founder and Lead Person, Dr. Christina Scano, highlighted the garden’s role in expanding JPHCS’s ecological initiatives, stating, “The outdoor perennial garden complements the school’s indoor hydroponic garden, creating a seamless connection between soil- and water-based systems, and providing students with a holistic and hands-on understanding of diverse ecological practices needed for a rapidly changing world.”
Designed to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, the garden underscores JPHCS’s mission to foster scientific discovery and environmental awareness. It is set to be an enduring resource for ecological learning, offering a colorful, engaging space for students and the community.
